THE UNFORGIVEN I和THE UNFORGIVEN II都是METALLICA的伟大作品，艺术之所以可以称为伟大，就是因为能够触动人心中不可忍受的那根细线，一旦这根线被触动，一生的悲喜都会从肺腑中涌出，顿时百感交集，这就是这两首伟大作品给人的感受。
THE UNFOGIVEN I，更多是讲人生，叙述与咏叹自己从NEW BLOOD到TO DIE REGREFULLY的无奈和挣扎，THE UNFORGIVEN II，更多是说爱情的失落，以及以此带来的生命意义的缺失，最后，所有人，爱的人，不爱的人，善，恶，都被冠以THE UNFORGIVEN之称。死后也不能得到宽恕，将是无尽的炼狱煎熬。
METALLICA这两首经典表现出的特殊在于，SOLO的成分大大降低了，并且两者有明显的旋律和内容上的承接关系，在I悔恨的唱腔后，又是II不甘的悲声，以不断的咏叹What i've felt, what i've known为基础，把人带进对自己生活的思索与悔恨，遗憾和纠缠中。从音乐到歌词，都给人悲怆的感觉，尤其是两首开头几乎同样的那个长的渐强电吉他音，似乎是一下子展开了众生痛苦的画卷，使人一开头便掉进旋涡不能自拔。
像METALLICA的大多数作品一样，黑暗与绝望是这两首经典的主要基调，不过这里还有悔恨和遗憾，心有不甘，并不像NOTHING ELSE MATTERS和FADE TO BLACK那样倾向于死亡，也不像ONE那样以最后的嘶吼唱腔和超长的爽快SOLO发泄，表现的更多是一种对人生的理性思考。
